About Nora

Nora Gross is a twenty-something born and raised in New York City, and currently living in Brooklyn. After completing college in 2008 with degrees in Art History, African American Studies, and Photography, Nora spent some time working on the West Side of Chicago as the director of a high school Writing Center. While there, she became deeply engaged in the questions and challenges of urban education which led her back to New York City where she is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology of Education.

While photography may be a side project and passion, the subjects and themes Nora explores in her professional/academic work and her photographic work are not so different. Nora first picked up a camera on the bench of her high school softball team, looking for a way to contribute to the team even while injured for two seasons. Since then, Nora has experimented with several genres of photography including street photography, portraiture, sports and dance journalism, and social documentary. She particularly enjoys photographing children and adolescents, making work that challenges assumptions or stereotypes, and capturing moments of intimacy or vulnerability.

Nora has studied at the International Center for Photography (New York), the Chicago Photography Center, and at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts with Emmet Gowin, Jocelyn Lee, and Andrew Moore. She also spent a summer as a studio intern for James Nachtwey, renowned war photographer.
